Before you start any sort of physical activity, whether it's Jiu Jitsu or tiddlywinks, it's important you warm up effectively.
That doesn't mean you have to do a million push ups and exhaust yourself before you get down to business.
What it means is you do a functional warm up that will prepare you for the activity ahead. This will help you get the most out of the session, and prevent injury.
Grabbing a partner and slowly practicing the techniques you learned in the previous class is one great way to warm up. But sometimes it’s nice to warm up a little on your own before you pair up with a training partner.
One of my favorite ways to do so is with animal drills. They’re a lot of fun and can give you a full body workout. Even better, these animal drills accurately represent some of the movements you'll use in Jiu-Jitsu.
To help you get started, we've put together a short video covering some of our favorite animal drills.
